What is hyaluronic acid?

Emily Shannon

Hyaluronic acid is something of a buzz word when it comes to skin. You’ll find it in skin creams, serums and masks but what actually is it, and how is it good for your skin? We’ve included this miracle worker in our Skin, Hair and Nails supplement and we want to share with you exactly why we love it so much, and of course why your skin loves it too!

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a clear, gooey substance that is produced naturally by the body. Its main function is to retain water to keep your tissues well lubricated and moist. It's hyaluronic acid that works alongside other key components of skin, including collagen and essential vitamins and minerals to keep skin healthy, youthful and glowing

Hyaluronic acid has a unique capacity in retaining water. As skin ages, it loses the ability to retain water as efficiently. That’s why hyaluronic acid is so useful when it comes to fighting the signs of visible ageing!

What happens as we age

When hyaluronic acid levels decline, it becomes much more difficult for skin cells to retain water which can also lead to a decline in collagen levels. As a result, skin begins to lose elasticity.

Factors affecting production of hyaluronic acid in the body

We know that levels of hyaluronic acid decline with age, but there are also a number of environmental factors that can have an impact on the level of hyaluronic acid present in the body. These include:

  • Exposure to UV light from the sun: This is just one of the reasons why it is so important to protect your skin. It’s essential to wear a strong Sun Protection Factor (SPF) if you are exposing bare skin to strong sunlight.
  • Smoking: Studies have shown tobacco to negatively affect hyaluronic acid levels within the body. This can lead to declining levels and result in visible ageing and dull skin.
  • Pollution: Air pollution has also been shown to have an impact on hyaluronic acid levels within the body. You can protect your skin from pollution by wearing an SPF as you would to protect your skin from the sun!

Don’t worry, it’s not all doom and gloom! We’ve included a low molecular weight hyaluronic acid in our Skin, Hair & Nails supplement to help you keep your levels topped up! Our supplement is packed with 70mg hyaluronic acid in each daily dose and has been recommended by Women’s Health Magazine! Alongside it you’ll also find all of the essential vitamins and minerals to keep your hair and nails healthy too, plus a hefty dose of collagen! Fancy giving it a go? Find out more here!
